The Resurrection Machine
Jericho Rose (Selaginella pilifera) : A species of hydro-ponic fern used in Latin American magico-religious practice for its ability to be revived from the” dead” upon contact with water.
The Resurrection Machine is a continuation of my practice, creating living demonstrations of metaphysical and physiological phenomenon for the viewer. The concepts of life and death are so vast that they are nearly incomprehensible. Almost every spiritual tradition known to man bases its foundation on two questions: Where did we come from, and what happens to us when we die? Both religious ritual and scientific laboratory process are methods of relating to the unobservable in a tangible way.
The Resurrection Machine allows the viewer to witness the processes of life, death and resuscitation in a sustained microcosm. Acting as a biological altar, the system both contains and displays the mysteries of animation, not just representations. The system functions both practically and symbolically, moving the plants through positions of above and below while maintaining their physical needs in various states of life.
